Petoskey hockey rakes in All-Big North honors from league

Big North Conference hockey games aren’t the kind of matchups typically used to pad stats.

It’s a conference filled with challenges throughout the league slate, making for 12 games players know will be a grind.

While it was Alpena again flexing its muscle at the season’s end for the BNC championship, right there with the Wildcats in a historic campaign was Petoskey.

A record 22-win season accompanied the Northmen thanks to a roster packed full of talented scorers, defensemen and goalies, while leading to a runner-up finish within the BNC.

Much of that group was recently highlighted on the 2025-26 All-Big North Conference hockey teams, led by a pair from Petoskey on the first team.

The Northmen had six players recognized overall, including two more on the second team.

Petoskey senior Madden Pateman exits the Northmen hockey program as one of the top all-time scorers and first team Big North Conference honors.

Petoskey senior Madden Pateman earned first team from the league’s coaches after setting records for points and goals in a single game this season.

Pateman also eclipsed the 100-point mark during his career and finished the season with a team-high 31 goals, to go with 24 assists.

Anderson Ward, a junior from Boyne City, also joined Pateman on the first team. Ward eclipsed the 100-points mark as well this season, with a year to add to it.

He closed his campaign with 13 goals as a defensemen, along with a team-high 35 assists.

On the second team for the Northmen were seniors Chase LaFaive and Evan Williams.

Already over 100 points for his career, Anderson Ward will return next season for Petoskey, with the Boyne City junior looking to add to an impressive mark on the program.

LaFaive of Harbor Springs ended his final season with excellent balance and 27 goals and 26 assists, while Williams, a Petoskey St. Michael senior and defenseman, had 18 goals and 18 assists.

Within the honorable mention group of the conference, Petoskey’s Eli Brinkman and Nick Timm were also recognized.

Brinkman, a senior forward, totaled 15 goals and 15 assists this season, then Timm, another senior and 21-game starter in goal for the Northmen, was credited with 14 wins, three shutouts and a .905 save percentage. He totaled 572 saves for the season.

NIFL launch campaign against violence towards women

The Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL) has launched an awareness campaign against violence towards women called #NotInOurGame.

Since 2020, 30 women have been violently killed in Northern Ireland.

In all but one case the perpetrator or suspected perpetrator has been a man and in most cases the man was well known to the woman.

The campaign aims to use the platform of football to raise awareness, start conversation and promote responsibility across society.

Fans will be encouraged to clap on the 30th minute for 30 seconds during Tuesday's Irish Premiership fixtures, with supporters also partaking during Saturday's Irish Cup and Premiership games.

On Tuesday, there will be a full round of Premiership matches as Larne host Coleraine, Cliftonville face Glentoran and Dungannon Swifts welcome Linfield.

Elsewhere, Ballymena United play Glenavon, Crusaders are at home against Bangor and Portadown and Carrick Rangers meet at Shamrock Park.

Clubs across the leagues have also used social media to post squad photos and player-led content to further address the issue that impacts communities across Northern Ireland.

"The Northern Ireland Football League is encouraging all supporters to play their part by joining the applause and continuing to share the campaign message across social media using #NotInOurGame," a NIFL statement read.

"Together, the football community can help drive awareness, challenge behaviour and play a role in ending violence against women."

'The response has been incredibly powerful' - Lawlor

NIFL chief executive Gerard Lawlor has praised the response to the campaign and also encouraged people to continue to take part.

"The response to #NotInOurGame has been incredibly powerful. Across our clubs, players and supporters, we are seeing the football community come together to send a clear message that violence against women has no place in our game or in society," Lawlor said.

"Football has a unique ability to bring people together, and we are proud to use our platform to raise awareness and drive meaningful change.

"The support we have received so far shows just how important this issue is, and we encourage everyone attending matches this week to take part in the 30th minute applause and stand with us."

Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich: Head-to-head record and past meetings

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich clash in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals this evening.

It’s a massive quarter-final tie, and a fixture often known as the European Clásico. The fixture is the most often played match in Champions League/European Cup history, with 28 matches, though the sides have surprisingly never met in a final.

With a combined 21 Champions League crowns and whopping 140 domestic trophies, it’s a fixture that is definitively European royalty.

But who holds the edge when it comes to head-to-head encounters?

Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich: Head-to-head record

Real Madrid hold the slight advantage when it comes to overall meetings in Europe. The Spaniards have won 14 of the 28 previous encounters, with Bayern Munich victorious on 11 occasions, and four draws. Goals are also fairly even, with Real Madrid netting 45 times in those meetings, three more than Bayern (42).

Bayern had, historically, had the better of the rivalry, but Real Madrid have roared back. The La Liga giants have progressed from the last four Champions League knockout ties between the teams, in 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2024. Remarkably, Real went on to win the trophy on each occasion.

Bayern have not beaten Real Madrid since a 2-1 victory over Los Blancos in the 2011/12 Champions League semi-finals. The Bavarians have since failed to beat Real Madrid in nine attempts.

In terms of ties, Real Madrid have progressed from eight of the 13 previous meetings over two legs.
