Smuts and Faf fire in European T20 league

JJ Smuts fell two runs short of a century before Faf du Plessis and Heinrich Klaasen powered Rotterdam to victory.

South Africans made their mark in both European T20 Premier League matches in Voorburg on Wednesday.

Former Proteas all-rounder and current Italy international JJ Smuts produced the biggest innings of the day, smashing 98 off 60 balls as Edinburgh Castle Rockers beat Belfast Wolves by 59 runs.

The 37-year-old struck 11 fours and three sixes to help Edinburgh reach 189-5 from their 20 overs. He was named Player of the Match after Belfast were bowled out for 130 in 17.1 overs.

David Miller made 20 for Belfast before being dismissed as the chase fell away.

Earlier, Faf du Plessis struck 79 off 51 balls as Rotterdam Dockers chased down 179 to beat Dublin Guardians by seven wickets.

The former Proteas captain hit nine fours and a six, sharing a 54-run partnership with Heinrich Klaasen before falling to Ravichandran Ashwin.

Klaasen finished unbeaten on 34 off 28 balls, hitting one four and two sixes as Rotterdam reached 179-3 in 18.4 overs.

With the ball, Roelof van der Merwe claimed 2-35, while Anrich Nortje and David Wiese picked up a wicket apiece.
