'My daughter will be very proud': Messi's teammates pay heartfelt tribute
“This is the moment we get to look back…”: Beckham hails Messi after international football retirement
London [UK], September 1 (ANI): England football icon David Beckham hailed Argentina legend Lionel Messi after conclusion of a glittering international career, saying that he delivered the biggest gift to his country and his legacy will live forever.
203 appearances, 124 goals and a thousand memories later, Messi pulled down curtains on a illustrious two-decade career with Argentina, with the FIFA World Cup 2026 final loss to Spain as his last appearance. A one-time FIFA World Cup winner, the second-highest scorer in tournament history and a two-time Copa America winner, Messi is hanging up the iconic striped Argentine colours after a career fulfilling in every sense. amunra-opinie.pl
Posting on Inatagram, Beckham wrote, “This is the moment we get to look back on & realise how grateful we were to witness the greatness of a young kid with a dream… Leo you have been a credit to yourself , your family , your friends and your country… Leading by example and creating inspiration for millions of children not just in Argentina but around the whole world.. Leo you delivered the greatest gift to your country and for that your legacy will live forever… Congratulations on all you achieved for Argentina."
Notably, Beckham is the co-owner of Major Soccer League (MLS) club Inter Miami, which Messi will still continue representing.
The decision came over a month after Argentina’s 0-1 loss to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final and days after demise of his father, Jorge.
In a statement originally written two days after the final and finalised after his father’s death, Messi expressed deep pride and peace with his choice, emphasising that the recent loss of his father made him even more convinced of his decision to step aside for the next generation.
“After all this time since the final, and after thinking about it a lot, I want to tell everyone that I’m retiring from the national team. It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep inside, but I understand that this is the right moment… I swear I always gave everything, not only in these last few years when we won everything, but before that too. I always fought and gave everything for this shirt, to bring you happiness and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football," said Messi.
“There is not much time left, and different chapters are coming to an end. This is one that hurts me a lot. I love, I loved, and I will always love being part of the national team. I gave everything I had, and I don’t have anything more to give. Also, there are great young players coming through who deserve to be here… Thank you to my family for always being there and for being with me throughout this beautiful but difficult journey… I leave with peace and pride, knowing that together with my teammates we gave you moments we once dreamed of… Thank you, God, for making me Argentine. Vamos Argentina! I wrote these words on July 21, two days after the final. Today, after what happened with my dad, I am even more convinced of this decision than before," he added.
Messi leaves behind an unparalleled international legacy as Argentina’s most-capped player and top all-time scorer, with 124 goals in 203 appearances. Over a career featuring six FIFA World Cup appearances (2006-2026), he amassed 21 World Cup goals–including eight goals and four assists in the 2026 tournament–and led Argentina to historic triumphs at the 2021 Copa America, the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and the 2024 Copa America. Premier League 2026-27: Key numbers and milestones from gameweek 2
London [UK], August 31 (ANI): The second gameweek of the 2026-27 Premier League season produced several notable milestones, with Manchester City reaching a landmark of 2,000 league goals, Hull City making a perfect start to life back in the top flight, and Erling Haaland continuing his remarkable scoring record, according to a press release.
Manchester City became only the sixth team in Premier League history to score 2,000 goals in the competition during their 4-1 win over Crystal Palace.
Erling Haaland took his tally to 24 Premier League goals in August from just 16 appearances, one behind Andrew Cole’s record of 25. He also scored in each of his first five Premier League away appearances against Crystal Palace, becoming only the fourth player to achieve the feat against the same opponent.
Hull City followed their opening-day victory over Manchester United with a 1-0 win over Coventry City, becoming only the fourth promoted side to win both of their opening Premier League games.
Goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis kept his second consecutive clean sheet, becoming the first goalkeeper since David Raya in 2021/22 to achieve the feat for a promoted side.
Liam Millar also became just the ninth Canadian to score in the Premier League.
Manchester United bounced back from their opening-day defeat with a 5-2 victory over Ipswich, led by Bruno Fernandes’ second Premier League hat-trick.
Both of Fernandes’ hat-tricks have now come in United’s first home game of the season. He has also recorded 17 goal involvements in his last 15 Premier League appearances against promoted sides, including 12 in his last nine at Old Trafford.
United have now won nine of their last 10 Premier League games at Old Trafford in 2026, collecting 27 points, more than any other side at home this calendar year.
Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest extended Andoni Iraola’s unbeaten Premier League run to 20 matches.
He is only the 12th manager to oversee an unbeaten run of at least 20 Premier League games and the first to achieve it across spells with two different clubs.
Morgan Gibbs-White was again influential for Forest, taking his tally to 17 Premier League goal involvements in 2026, including 13 goals and four assists.
Chelsea made it two wins from two with a 4-3 victory over Brighton, taking their tally to seven goals across their opening two Premier League games.
Xabi Alonso is only the fourth manager whose team has scored seven or more goals across his first two Premier League games in charge.
Joao Pedro also became only the sixth player in Premier League history to score, assist and score an own goal in the same match.
Brighton had 74.4% possession, the highest recorded by any team against Chelsea since 2003/04.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored for Leeds against Brentford, becoming the only player to have scored in each of the last 11 Premier League seasons, from 2016/17 through 2026-27.
Leeds have also now gone 10 consecutive seasons unbeaten in their opening home league game.
Gameweek 2 concludes at Villa Park, where Aston Villa host Arsenal at 12:30 AM IST on Tuesday. (ANI)

Asian Games accommodation mess: The players aren’t to blame

In the last few days, there have been reports about how major cricket-playing countries are unhappy with the accommodation in Nagoya for cricketers at the forthcoming Asian Games. From what we understand, a representative was also sent to Japan to conduct a recce and check whether things could be salvaged or improved.
There are two questions here: are the cricketers, each a huge star, being brattish and asking for extra privileges? And, second, could things have been handled better and is this all a result of administrative inefficiency?
The answer to the first question is a resounding no. Not a single cricketer has said a word and perhaps no one will. Everyone realises the importance of a multi-sport event, and it is the dream of every sportsperson to win a gold medal. Roger Federer still regards his 2008 Beijing gold medal, won alongside Stan Wawrinka, as one of the highest points of his career.
Coming to the second question, the answer is an overwhelming yes.
Nagoya is a relatively small place and the availability of high-quality accommodation is limited, particularly around the venues. In the absence of a Games Village, most continental sports bodies have moved early and blocked accommodation for their athletes.
To give an example, Athletics could well have blocked the best hotels around the Paloma Mizuho Stadium, where the events will take place. For cricket, it was the job of the ACC, led by Mohsin Naqvi, to do the same. The ACC, the body in charge, should have booked the best hotels available in and around the venues. It did not and allowed things to drift.
Now, the players are left with accommodation some 20km away and of poor quality. It is the result of administrative failure on the part of Naqvi and his team, and the blame lies squarely with them.
Open the Asian Games handbook and check whose name is given as the person in charge of cricket. It is Mohsin Naqvi, as head of the ACC. Had the ACC acted in time and moved early, it could have reserved better hotels for the players. Now, the time has gone. No good hotel is available and chances are that none will become available in the coming days either.
The truth is that the players will have to make do with poor accommodation because of an inept ACC.
Their discomfort is entirely fair. The players aren’t being brats here. They are asking for fair treatment from their governing body, and that is a very reasonable demand. And, as with many things, Naqvi has let them down.
As head of Pakistan cricket, he has pushed the sport down the cliff. While the players and coaches are in the firing line after the abject surrender at Lord’s, the blame should not be ascribed to them alone. This is a systemic failure, and the PCB is responsible.
But no one dares question Naqvi in Pakistan. With the ACC, however, things are different. He has created this mess, and he should face the questions that are inevitably going to come out of it.
