Tiafoe survives five-set thriller to book US Open semifinal spot

Tiafoe survives five-set thriller to book US Open semifinal spot

New York [US], September 9 (ANI): Frances Tiafoe produced a stunning comeback at the US Open, rallying from two sets down and overcoming a 0-3 deficit in the fifth set to defeat compatriot Alex Michelsen 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(10-6) in a thrilling quarterfinal.

The 28-year-old battled for four hours and 38 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach the US Open semifinals for the third time in his career, having previously made the last four in 2022 and 2024, according to the ATP website.

Tiafoe became the first American man this century to reach three US Open semifinals, matching the achievement of Andre Agassi, who reached the stage in 2002, 2003 and 2005. chickenroadslot.lat

Michelsen, who had not dropped a set en route to the quarterfinals, appeared on course for victory when he served for the match at 5-4 in the third set. However, two double faults helped Tiafoe break back and level at 5-5.

Michelsen saved a set point with an ace at 5-6, but Tiafoe continued his momentum and won four consecutive games to take the third set 7-5.

Tiafoe then forced a deciding set after taking the fourth 6-3, but Michelsen again made a strong start, racing to a 3-0 lead.

The American refused to surrender and eventually completed his comeback in the deciding-set tiebreak, winning 10-6.

Michelsen finished with more total points than Tiafoe, 173-170, but Tiafoe prevailed for the third time in as many meetings between the two Americans. The match featured 40 break points, with both players breaking serve eight times.

Following his victory, Tiafoe celebrated before consoling an emotional Michelsen at the net.

The semifinal appearance has also lifted Tiafoe, who began the year ranked No. 30, four places to No. 8 in the ATP Live Rankings. He is guaranteed to return to the Top 10 in the post-US Open rankings for the first time since September 2023.

Tiafoe will face defending champion and World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz or fellow American Ben Shelton in the semifinals. (ANI)

India will face tough competition at Asian Games: Gavaskar

While there has been a lot of discussion regarding the facilities that will be provided to the Indian cricket team at the Asian Games in Japan, India great Sunil Gavaskar batted for conquering the challenge, instead of making it a big issue, to make the event more special. The Indian team is scheduled to play its first match on September 28 at the Korogi Sports Park, which is known for hosting cricket and baseball games.

“It’s not a regular cricket playing country. I think perhaps they will not be what you normally get to see in cricket playing countries. So the conditions might be different, the crowd might also be a lot less than what you get when India plays," Gavaskar said during an interaction with the media.

“It’s very difficult from here to talk about the pitches or the facilities available for practice, or about accommodation. However, I think the beauty of cricket has been that cricketers generally, when you play in club cricket in your cities, you play on maidans (open grounds), the dressing rooms are just tents, outfields are not necessarily the best. I think that is the challenge, and to conquer that challenge and to win will be even more special," he added.

Gavaskar appreciated the fact that the Indian team has decided to enter the event with full strength. “Indian batting is absolutely fantastic. Down the order, I think we’ve got players at number six and seven who can score at strike rate of 140, 150. This is something to really look forward to. Also, playing with (Jasprit) Bumrah is actually a good idea. He has to get some bowling under his belt before he plays in the series against New Zealand. Shreyas Iyer is also very experienced as a captain. During IPL, he played well and there should not be any further pressure on him for this event. Every captain gets the honour and privilege of leading the country, so I don’t think that he’s going to have any pressure going into the Asian Games," said Gavaskar.

“It’s going to be tough as it’s a T20 tournament. Bangladesh are in form, Pakistan are always dangerous and Sri Lanka also as a T20 team are terrific, not to forget Afghanistan, so it’s not going to be easy at all," he added.

“Apart from these four countries, Nepal’s been playing some very good cricket as well. So, we saw that in the T20 World Cup, where they almost surprised England and a couple of other teams. Bangladesh recently defeated Australia, at their home, so one cannot just take things easy," he said.

Harmanpreet or Smriti: Who should lead India to LA28?

At the end of the T20 World Cup in England, much was said about why India should look at Smriti Mandhana as captain going into LA28.

Harmanpreet Kaur has done the job for a decade, and India’s performances in the last two editions of the tournament have been below par. While India won the 50-over World Cup under Harmanpreet in 2025, the T20 performances have not been up to the mark.

An infusion of fresh ideas seemed the logical way forward, particularly with the Olympics just two years away. Does Harmanpreet inspire confidence in the T20 format as captain to guide India to an Olympic medal? That is the question that needs to be asked.

Thereafter, India won the Lord’s Test under Harmanpreet and, as is always the case, the issue was swept under the carpet. A Test-match win became the mask for the T20 World Cup failure, and once again formats were mixed up by fans back home.

Now, with India doing well in the Asia Cup – a below-par competition featuring weaker teams – there is every reason to assume that we will enter what I call an ‘illusion of complacency’. Not winning the Asia Cup would be news. Anything else is routine. No team in the competition comes close to India, and it cannot be used as a yardstick.

In 10 days, India will play at the Asian Games. Yet again, the same teams currently in Dubai will be in Japan. Yet again, it will be easy. And yet again, the real issues could be glossed over with a gold medal.

This is where the problem lies. We cannot mask things with these easy wins. India will be tested again during the Champions Trophy, and the questions will return. Only valuable time would have been lost.

Harmanpreet the batter remains key for India. Her effort in the last match of the T20 World Cup at Lord’s was proof of that. She played brilliantly against Australia, and there is no replacement for her just yet.

But as captain, there was little to feel good about. The question is whether the selectors will look at competitions such as the Asia Cup and Asian Games when making a long-term call. Isn’t Olympic gold the goal?

Can this team, under Harmanpreet, inspire confidence that it can accomplish that mission?

As captain, Smriti has done well. She has been a standout for RCB, and the titles tell their own story. For India, I have seen her step up time and again to do the job. In a 50-over contest, for example, she has often led when Harmanpreet has gone off the field.

The truth is that Smriti is ready and deserves a chance. If she has to build a team for LA, she will need time to settle into the role and make the most of it.

In this catch-22, all that matters is what is best for India. The Asia Cup and Asian Games will not truly test India, and the selectors need to remember that before making the call.

Liam Lawson’s Continues His RedBull Run

Liam Lawson Gets Another Chance

Liam Lawson will race for RedBull Racing for a third straight weekend. He will compete at the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid.
The team is still waiting for Isack Hadjar to return. As a result, Lawson will race beside Max Verstappen again.
This gives Lawson more time in one of Formula 1’s top teams. It also gives Red Bull more time to study his progress.

A Strong Start at Zandvoort

Lawson began his latest Red Bull run at the Dutch Grand Prix. He finished seventh at Zandvoort.
The result was impressive because Lawson had little time to prepare. Even so, he adapted quickly after joining the team.
Lawson also said he felt more comfortable than during his earlier Red Bull spell in 2025.
Therefore, his result gave both Lawson and Red Bull more confidence. It also helped him settle into the team.

Lawson’s reaction after his performance

A Tougher Race at Monza

The Italian Grand Prix brought a harder weekend for Liam Lawson. He started the race from the pit lane.
Lawson finished 14th at Monza. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen finished third for Red Bull.
The result was not as strong as Lawson’s Dutch Grand Prix finish. However, Red Bull still decided to keep him in the car.
Hadjar continues to recover. Therefore, Lawson will get another chance to show his ability in Madrid.

Why the Third Weekend Matters

The extra race gives Lawson more time with the Red Bull team. He can learn more about the car and its setup.
He can also work more closely with Verstappen and the team staff. This experience may help him during future races.
Lawson has faced another challenge during the driver changes. He has prepared for races with both Red Bull and Racing Bulls.
The two cars feel different to drive. Because of this, Lawson must adjust each time he changes cars.

Lawson Can Build Momentum

The Spanish Grand Prix could become an important weekend for Liam Lawson. A strong result may improve his chances of a longer Red Bull role.
Red Bull is still reviewing its driver choices. Therefore, Lawson must show speed, focus and steady form.
