Sourav Ganguly turns 54: The captain who changed Indian cricket

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly celebrates his 54th birthday today (8 July). Popularly known as “Dada” in cricketing circles, Ganguly played a huge role in the evolution of Indian cricket through his fearless captaincy and elegant batting.

After making a dream Test debut with a memorable century at Lord’s in 1996, Ganguly became one of India’s most dependable batters. His remarkable opening partnership with Sachin Tendulkar in ODIs helped India secure many memorable victories, making them one of the finest opening pairs in cricket history.

Ganguly took over India’s captaincy during a difficult period in 2000. Under his leadership, India became a far more competitive Test side, reached the final of the 2003 ODI World Cup, and developed a fearless group of young players who later became match-winners for the country.

Across 424 international matches, Ganguly scored 18,575 runs, including 38 international centuries. However, his career had its fair share of ups and downs, including being dropped from the Indian team. He made a remarkable comeback, proving his value once again in both Tests and ODIs.
