‘Don’t want to give fodder for speculators’ — BCCI dismisses Rohit rumours

The BCCI has binned the rumours over Rohit Sharma’s future. A direct question was asked to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia about whether the cricket board could provide any clarity on what lines it is taking regarding Rohit’s time with the Indian team going forward. Saikia’s answer was straightforward.

“He (Rohit) is playing superbly in all the matches,” said the Board secretary. “So what more (do) you want? In the last match, he scored 138 runs. So why is there a speculation? I do not want to give some fodder for the speculators.”

Saikia was interacting with the media after the BCCI’s future roadmap meeting here at the Cricket Centre on Thursday. Alongside the cricket board’s top brass, the meeting was attended by India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir and head of cricket at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, VVS Laxman. Rohit’s future wasn’t an item on the agenda, but with the skipper and head coach present, any negative outcome would have had ramifications for the former India captain. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar couldn’t attend the meeting due to personal commitments.

It has now become a pattern. Discussions on how long Rohit will continue and the possibility of him making it to the 2027 World Cup have become fashionable before every ODI series. In England in July, it came to the point of him immediately walking into the sunset, as per reports. The BCCI had to issue a statement to rubbish the speculation.

It is disrespectful to one of the all-time greats in the 50-over game, someone who has scored 11,895 runs, including 34 hundreds, in 288 ODIs at an average of 48.95. Yes, he is 39 years old. But since October 2025, he has scored 727 runs in 15 ODIs, including centuries in Australia and England, at an average of 51.92. The outcome of today’s meeting is that Rohit Sharma remains the master of his own destiny. As long as he is performing, nobody can touch him.

No director of cricket

Laxman’s presence in the meeting fanned the director-of-cricket fire (read, rumours). Indian cricket never had a post like that. Ravi Shastri once served as the Team Director in England, but that was restricted to the Indian team only. Saikia made it clear that, at least in the near future, the BCCI doesn’t have any plan to create a new post. He was asked whether Laxman could be the director of cricket.

“I do not comment on rumours,” said the BCCI secretary. “We don’t have any such kind of discussion, neither we have such intention.”

No selection panel discussion

In the lead-up to the meeting, Agarkar’s future, too, became a talking point — whether the chief selector would be given another extension. Asked about that, Saikia said: “There is no such discussion in today’s meeting.”

He spoke about how the discussions centred around bettering India’s performances overseas and the process of dealing with injury issues. “There is no difficulty in the coordination. Everything is moving in the right direction,” asserted the Board secretary.

Regarding the accommodations and facilities for the cricketers at the upcoming Asian Games, Saikia said: “We are not going to have any difficulties in Japan. If any kind of situation arises, we will take appropriate role at the right time, so that we ensure that our players and the support staff will get the best of facilities in Asian Games.

“If required, the BCCI will have its own system in place to provide the best facilities to our players.”
