Goodell: Rooney Rule Will Stay, Evolve, Not Disappear

At the NFL annual meeting, Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed the Rooney Rule will stay, though it may be updated. He stressed the rule’s importance for diversity in coaching hires.

Goodell said the Rooney Rule, a longstanding requirement for head‑coach hiring, will not be eliminated. The league will continue to refine the rule as circumstances change.

He emphasized that diversity remains a core value and that the rule aligns with evolving laws. Goodell remains open to dialogue with stakeholders, including Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier.
