Jose Fernandez made history with his powerful MLB debut, hitting two home runs including a go-ahead three-run shot that secured a 7-5 victory for the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Detroit Tigers. The 22-year-old Venezuelan became just the seventh player since 1900 to hit two homers in his first game, joining an elite group that includes recent additions Chase DeLauter and Trevor Story.
Fernandez, who wasn't on the Diamondbacks' opening-day roster, finished his debut with three hits and four RBIs. 'I returned to my days as a kid — just a dream come true,' said Fernandez through an interpreter. Manager Torey Lovullo praised the young player, noting he 'came through our system, through our academy, and it's a great story, a great baseball story.'
