MONROE – The home lanes at Monroe Sport Center worked well for the St. Mary Catholic Central girls bowling team.
The Kestrels emerged with team and individual championship at the Division 4 Regionals they hosted.
SMCC has never had a team or individual Regional championship before.
It only had reached the state finals once before.
“Back in 2020-2021 (our second season as an SMCC sport) the girls team came in second at regionals,” SMCC coach Roy Ford said. “The competition was different that year (COVID). The competition changed to 8 Baker Games and 2 full team games a few years ago. Our girls improved our team score from last year by 259 pins.”
The Kestrels posted a team score of 2,625.
Chloe Orris was the individual champion with a score of 1,010. Teammates Braelyn Runyon (third place 969) and Sophia Jacobson (seventh 916) also qualified for state.
Kestrels Katie Blackmore and Ellana Orris just missed in eighth and ninth, respectively.
Anthony Duran was two spots away from qualifying for SMCC’s boys in ninth place. The Falcons were fourth in the team standings.
PREP BOWLING
Airport teams both qualify
WESTLAND – Airport’s boys and girls teams both will compete for state championships.
The Jets won the Division 2 Regional at Westland Bowl with a score of 3,607, which was more than 500 pins better than runner-up New Boston Huron.
Huron claimed the second state-qualifying spot.
The Airport girls were second. New Boston Huron wound up fourth and Gibraltar Carlson fifth.
Huron’s Hunter Wyszynski was the boys individual champ with a six-game total of 1,373. Closest to him was Tyson Hill of Airport (1,286) and Luke Dulecki of Huron (1,176) they also qualified for state.
Airport’s Dylan Aikey (eighth place) and Aiden Sainato of Huron (tenth) narrowly missed.
The Jets had a pair of individual state qualifiers as Abby Hill placed second and Khloe Shook sixth. Joining them at state will be New Boston Huron’s Alayna Conklin, who was fourth, and Carlson’s Natalie Daugherty, who captured the seventh and final qualifying spot.
Reese Arndt of Carlson and Huron’s Vanessa DeVita just missed in eighth and ninth, respectively.
Milan, Flat Rock 1-2
ADRIAN – Milan and Flat Rock girls teams both are headed for the state finals after taking the top two spots in the Division 3 Regional at Lenawee Recreation.
Milan won with 2,818 and Flat Rock shot 2,731.
Those two teams captured five of the seven individual state-qualifying slots.
Milan’s Maggie Smith was the champion with 1,097 over six games and teammate Kenleigh Vandergrift took third (1,000).
Flat Rock finished 2-4-6 with Grace Taylor (1,060), Diane Percha (989) and Jaclynn Motyka (958).
Lexiz Santana of Flat Rock was one spot away from qualifying in eighth place and Emalie Cadle of Jefferson wound up 11th.
Dundee’s Bryce Ostrander was the only Monroe County Region boy to qualify in sixth place.
Brady Crawford of Milan wound up 12th and Flat Rock’s Dominik Kryk 13th.
Bedford’s Hubbard qualifies
TAYLOR – Braden Hubbard of Bedford is headed to the state finals.
He finished fifth in the Division 1 Regional at Skore Lanes with a score of 1.202 over six games.
Monroe’s Jaden Seaver was 12th.

Three teams moving on
Gibraltar Carlson, Airport and Bedford will continue their quests of state championships
Carlson was the champion of the Division 2 District at Dexter with a score of 786.02 and Airport was second with 772.04.
New Boston Huron placed sixth.
Bedford was third behind Woodhaven and Wyandotte Roosevelt in the Division 1 District at Wyandotte.
Monroe finished in 11th place.
