Lions Trade David Montgomery to Texans

The Detroit Lions traded running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans on March 2, clearing roughly $3.5 million in cap space after Montgomery’s reduced role last season. Lions GM Brad Holmes said the move was a way to move forward, though conversations with Montgomery were still fluid.

Montgomery, who turns 29 in June, had a career‑low season behind Jahmyr Gibbs and was set to earn $6 million in his first year of a two‑year extension. The trade frees the Lions to look at cost‑effective options such as Brian Robinson, Najee Harris, Michael Carter or Emari Demercado.
