Makybe Diva, Three‑Time Melbourne Cup Winner, Dies at 26

Makybe Diva, the Australian champion who won the Melbourne Cup three times, died at 26 after a brief bout of colic at her retirement stable near Geelong.

Makybe Diva, the British‑born mare who captured the Melbourne Cup in 2003, 2004 and 2005, died at 26 after a brief bout of colic at her retirement stable near Geelong, outside Melbourne. The champion earned $10 million in prize money and was owned by Tony Santic, a Croatian‑born tuna fisherman who named her after the first letters of his employees’ names.

Owner Santic said the mare was family and that she gave Australia unforgettable moments. Jockey Glen Boss, who rode her to all three victories, said she left a huge footprint in Australian racing history. The Victoria Racing Club paid tribute, calling her a true legend.
